Leadership tip #1

April 30, 2013

Reward your team and family members.

For those of you that are experiencing difficulties with your relationships either at work or personally, there maybe a simple mathematical equation that can help you to improve relations. Marcial Losada realized after working with organizations that the individuals that flourish have a high positive to negative ratio when dealing with others, the most successful way to achieve optimum results in relationships is using Losadas mathematical equation of a 3:1 positive to negative ratio. That means you deliver 3 positives to 1 negative feedback.
In high performing teams and successful marriages the Losada principle has been observed to operate at higher than a 5:1 ratio.
In saying this when giving positive feedback be aware not to be patronizing and simply state what you notice your team or family member is doing well, “I noticed that when you handled that difficult situation how well you composed yourself”.
There are also cultural factors that can influence good relations with others for example in the German culture too many compliments can appear to be watery and can create a loss of respect, as opposed to America or the UK where people are conditioned to receive lots of feedback. For more information on this topic Gerte Hofstedes developed a powerful tool called the five dimensions of culture.
